How to delete a WhatsApp group for everyone, or just exit it

Delete a WhatsApp group as an admin by removing every member first, or exit and delete it just for you. See what members see, from WhatsApp help.

In short: Only an admin can delete a group for everyone. Open the group info, remove every member, then exit and choose Exit and delete for me. If you skip removing members, the group carries on for them. As a member, you can only exit and delete the group from your own phone. Deleted groups can’t be restored. Facts from WhatsApp’s Help Center, as of November 2026.

Exit or delete: what is the difference?

Action Who can do it Result
Exit group Anyone You leave and keep your chat history
Exit and delete for me Anyone You leave, and the group and its history go from your phone
Delete for all members Admin Remove every member first, then exit and delete

How to delete a group for everyone as an admin

From WhatsApp’s admin steps:

  1. Open the group chat and tap the group name.
  2. Remove each member, one at a time.
  3. When only you remain, tap Exit group.
  4. Choose Exit and delete for me.

WhatsApp warns that removing members or deleting a group doesn’t delete the group from other members’ phones, so they may still see the old messages. If you exit without removing everyone, the group stays active for the others.

How to exit and delete as a member

From WhatsApp’s member steps:

  1. Open the group chat and tap the group name.
  2. Tap Exit group.
  3. Choose Exit group to keep your history, or Exit and delete for me to remove it.

To delete a group you already left, open it, tap the group name, then tap Delete group twice.

What other people see

  • Admins see a notice that you left, and this can’t be turned off.
  • Members can see your name and number in the Past members list for up to 60 days.
  • You can’t restore a deleted group. To rejoin one you left, ask an admin to invite you again.

If you’ve experienced a scam, WhatsApp suggests choosing Exit group rather than deleting, so you keep the messages as evidence.

Before you delete a business group

Export or note anything you need first, and tell members where the conversation is moving. If a group is only noisy, deleting may be more than you need: an admin can restrict who sends messages. Our guide on running WhatsApp groups for teams covers when a group is the right tool.

Frequently asked questions

Can an admin delete a group without removing members? No. If you exit without removing them, the group continues for the others.

Does the group vanish from other members’ phones? WhatsApp says removing a member or deleting a group won’t delete it on other members’ devices.

Can I recover a deleted group? No. You’d need to create a new group.
