In short: Open the group, tap its name, then choose to invite by link. You can copy the link, share it through WhatsApp or another app, or show a QR code. Anyone with the link can join and pass it on, so turn on Approve new members for anything that shouldn’t be public. Facts from WhatsApp’s Help Center, as of November 2026.

From WhatsApp’s steps:

  1. Tap Chats, then open the group.
  2. Tap the group name.
  3. Tap the invite option.
  4. Choose how to share it:
    • Forward link via WhatsApp
    • Send link via SMS or Send link via email
    • Share link for another app
    • QR code for a scannable code

Admins can always do this. In groups with fewer than 33 members, ordinary members can too, by default. An admin can change that:

  1. Open the group and tap its name.
  2. Tap Group permissions.
  3. Turn Invite via group link or QR code on or off.

When it’s off, only admins can create a link. See group admin settings.

WhatsApp advises sharing group links only with people you trust, because anyone with the link can join and forward it. Three habits help:

  • Approve new members. With this on, admins approve each person, even with a link.
  • Reset a leaked link. The same invite screen lets admins reset it, and the old link stops working.
  • Ask first. WhatsApp’s guidance says to get permission before adding someone to a group. A link lets people choose to join.

Where a business can use one

Print the QR code at a shop counter or event, or link it from your website for a customer club or a parent group. Groups hold up to 1,024 members. For several related groups, see WhatsApp communities.

If you want people to message you rather than join a group, use a personal chat link and QR code, free from our tools site.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I see the option to invite by link? An admin may have turned off Invite via group link or QR code, or the group has 33 or more members and you aren’t an admin.

Does a group link expire? WhatsApp’s page doesn’t describe an expiry here. Admins can reset the link to stop the old one working.

Can someone join without approval? Yes, unless Approve new members is on.
