In short: WhatsApp coexistence lets one phone number use both the WhatsApp Business app (on a phone) and the WhatsApp Business API (in a platform like Risponse) at the same time. One-to-one messages sync both ways.
Definition
WhatsApp coexistence is an option from Meta that lets a number already on the WhatsApp Business app connect to both:
- The WhatsApp Business app on a phone (so the owner or a frontline agent can keep chatting one to one), and
- The WhatsApp Business API (for sending templates, connecting to a team inbox, or automating messages).
Before coexistence, a number had to choose: either the app or the API. Meta’s API cannot register a number that is already in use with WhatsApp until it is deleted from the app, as Meta’s phone number guide explains. Coexistence removes that choice for Business app numbers.
As of October 2026, the number needs the WhatsApp Business app version 2.24.17 or later. Meta’s coexistence guide sets out the full rules.
How it works
When coexistence is active, one-to-one messages sync between the Business app and whatever platform is connected via the API. A message received on the phone appears in your team inbox. A reply sent from the team inbox appears in the phone’s chat history. Messages you send from the app show up in the inbox too.
At setup, up to 180 days (about six months) of one-to-one chat history can sync. During setup, you choose in the Business app whether to share this history. The connected platform then has 24 hours to sync it. If the window is missed, the number has to be disconnected and connected again.
The sync covers one-to-one conversations. WhatsApp groups are not synced in coexistence mode. Groups keep working in the Business app on the phone, but they cannot be used through the API. In Risponse, groups come into the inbox on numbers connected by QR code.
What coexistence is not
Coexistence is not the same as:
- QR-code connection: where you link the inbox as a device, like WhatsApp Web. In Risponse, a QR connection syncs everything the number is part of, including groups. The phone does not need to stay online, but WhatsApp logs out linked devices if you do not use the phone for more than 14 days.
- API-only: where the number runs only on the API, with no Business app behind it. Some features need this. Meta’s Groups API needs an Official Business Account, and Meta does not grant that badge to Business app numbers.
Coexistence is specifically the hybrid: app and API running on the same number at the same time, as an option Meta supports.
Why businesses use it
A common reason: a business owner or manager wants to keep using WhatsApp on their phone, while also giving their team access through a shared inbox.
Before coexistence, the choice was uncomfortable. You could pass the phone around the team, or move the number to the API and lose the Business app. Coexistence removes that trade-off, with the limits listed below.
Other reasons:
- You want Meta-approved message templates (an API feature) but your team already uses the app.
- You want to bring up to 180 days of one-to-one chat history into a team inbox.
- You want to move gradually. Start with the API, and keep the app on the phone as a backup.
Limitations to know
| Limitation | Detail |
|---|---|
| Groups not synced | Groups keep working in the Business app, but they do not sync and cannot use the API |
| Meta fees apply on API messages | Meta bills messages sent through the API per delivered message, by category and recipient country. Messages sent from the Business app stay free |
| Some app features turned off | Broadcast lists are turned off, and existing lists become read-only. Disappearing messages, view once and live location stop for one-to-one chats |
| App tools not in the API | Calls, the catalog, labels, quick replies and Channels keep working in the app, but not through the API |
| One main phone | The Business app runs on one main phone. Linked devices are unlinked at setup. You can link up to four again, but not WhatsApp for Windows or WearOS |
| The phone must stay in use | If the main phone is inactive for about 14 days, the number can disconnect |
| Fixed sending speed | Meta fixes coexistence numbers at 20 messages per second |
| Blue tick not included | Meta does not grant Official Business Account status to Business app numbers, so do not count on it with coexistence |
Meta sets these rules and can change them. They are correct as of October 2026. Check Meta’s coexistence guide and Meta’s pricing page for current rules and rates before you switch.
Coexistence vs QR connection
| QR connection | Coexistence | |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp groups | ✓ Synced | ✗ Not synced (they stay in the app) |
| Phone activity | Phone can go offline. Linked devices log out after 14 days without using it | Number can disconnect after about 14 days without using the main phone |
| Connects through | A linked device, like WhatsApp Web | Meta’s Cloud API |
| Meta-approved templates | No | Yes |
| Meta fees | None | Per delivered API message. App messages stay free |
