In short: Open a chat, tap the attach icon, tap Document, then choose your photo. Files sent this way can be up to 2 GB. For a quick share, choose HD quality when you attach a normal photo instead. Facts from WhatsApp’s Help Center, as of November 2026.

Why send a photo as a document

WhatsApp says media it carries is usually compressed when shared, so a photo can arrive at lower quality than the original. Sending it as a document suits times when details matter: product catalogues, signed papers, invoices, floor plans and design files.

The document route also keeps the file separate from the receiver’s normal photo flow, and it opens as a file. Exact behaviour on their phone can vary, so send a test first if it matters.

On Android

  1. Open the individual or group chat.
  2. Tap the attach icon.
  3. Tap Document.
  4. Find the photo on your phone. If it isn’t listed, browse to your phone’s image folder.
  5. Select it and tap send.

On iPhone

  1. Open the chat. WhatsApp first needs permission to reach your files and photos, set in iPhone Settings.
  2. Tap the attach icon.
  3. Tap Document.
  4. Choose the file from iCloud Drive or another source.

WhatsApp’s Document option picks from file locations. If your photo is only in the Photos app, save it to the Files app first, then pick it from there.

The quicker option: HD quality

If you only need a sharper picture, attach the photo as usual. Before sending, open the quality option and choose HD quality rather than Standard quality. HD isn’t available for status updates or profile pictures.

HD photo Photo as document
Best for Everyday sharing Files that must stay as they are
Compression Media may still be compressed Sent as a file
Size limit Normal media limits Up to 2 GB
Shows as A photo in the chat A file to open

Common problems

  • Sending many photos fails. WhatsApp notes there can be issues sending a large number at once, so send fewer at a time.
  • The file won’t attach. Check WhatsApp has permission to reach your files, and that the file is under 2 GB.

For a business team

Shops and service teams send the same catalogues and invoices over and over. Inside a team inbox, your whole team works from one number, and private media links can require sign-in and expire when you turn on media privacy. To collect details or take payment in the chat rather than send a file, see in-chat actions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum document size on WhatsApp? 2 GB, according to WhatsApp’s help page.

Does sending as a document keep full quality? It’s sent as a file, which is the usual way to avoid photo compression. WhatsApp’s page says compression applies to media, and it doesn’t give a separate quality promise for documents.

Can I send several photos as documents at once? It depends on your phone’s file picker. If it’s slow, send fewer at a time.
